The ever louche, womanising drinker - and occasional actor -  has cracked it, a part in a West End play. The bodies inevitably start to appear as Charles finds himself in a race -  which will come first a) to be murdered himself, or b) to be thrown out of his lodgings by his long suffering, estranged wife Frances.

21st PRECINCT Broadcast from July 7th 1953 through November 1st 1956 on the CBS network. 21st Precinct was a very dramatic police drama. CBS decided to use New York City as the backdrop for this series and to focus on the happenings in an actual police precinct. The premise was to put the listener into the drama from the opening phone call until the final report was written. The 21st was described as "just lines on a map of the city of New York. Most of the 173,000 people wedged into the...

SINGLES AND DOUBLES COLLECTION: A - C This is a work in progress. This OTRR Collection is a Non-Certified one, containing series in which currently only one or two episodes are known to exist -- hence the name: "Singles and Doubles Collection". Almost every type genre is included. Radio -- called by some The Theater of the Mind -- has been with us since 1920 when stations WWJ of Detroit and KDKA of Pittsburg made the first regular commercial broadcasts. The first program aimed at...

BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR William Gargan, who also played the better known television (and radio) detective Martin Kane, was the voice of New York eye Barrie Craig while Ralph Bell portrayed his associate, Lt. Travis Rogers. Craig's office was on Madison Avenue and his adventures were fairly standard PI fare. He worked alone, solved cases efficiently, and feared no man. As the promos went, he was "your man when you can't go to the cops. Confidentiality a specialty." This...

THE WHISTLER You're walking alone on the street at night, but then you hear another set of footsteps and a haunting tune being whistled by an unseen stranger. Fritz Lang used an similar premise in his 1930s German movie with Peter Lorre playing M , a psychopathic murderer of children. But the American radio series was even creepier. The unseen Whistler didn't kill anyone (that we know of), but he certainly loved watching murders take place, narrating them for us, and chuckling at the suffering...

ADVENTURES OF PHILIP MARLOWE Elements of mystery have always been represented in literature, but the detective story didn't arrive on the scene until the mid 1800's. Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue, published in 1841, was the first. The Murder's main character, C. Auguste Dupin, was a brilliant detective who relied on superior deductive powers to solve the crime. He and his unnamed narrator companion solved this and two other mysteries. Later in the 19th century Sir Arthur Conan...

BOSTON BLACKIE Boston Blackie is a fictional character who has been on both sides of the law. As originally created by author Jack Boyle, he was a safecracker -- a hardened criminal who had served time in a California prison. Prowling the underworld as a detective in adaptations for films, radio, and television, the detective Boston Blackie was "an enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend". The Boston Blackie radio series, starring Chester Morris, began...

THE SIX SHOOTER The Six Shooter brought James Stewart to the NBC microphone on September 20, 1953, in a fine series of folksy Western adventures. Stewart was never better on the air than in this drama of Britt Ponset, frontier drifter created by Frank Burt. The epigraph set it up nicely: "The man in the saddle is angular and long-legged: his skin is sun dyed brown. The gun in his holster is gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl. People call them both The Six Shooter." Ponset was a...

Librivox recording of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , by Mark Twain. Read by Annie Coleman . Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) by Mark Twain is one of the truly great American novels, beloved by children, adults, and literary critics alike. The book tells the story of "Huck" Finn (first introduced as Tom Sawyer's sidekick in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer ), his friend Jim, and their journey down the Mississippi River on a raft. LibriVox recording of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Read by John Greenman. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (published 1876) is a very well-known and popular story concerning American youth. Mark Twain's lively tale of the scrapes and adventures of boyhood is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting...

This is a contemporary amateur home recording of a live WWII-era radio news broadcast (see note below). This is the May 18th, 1941 installment of Walter Winchell's program of news and commentary, presented in Winchell's characteristically sensationalist style. The program is broken up between three sides on two 10" 78rpm disks; I have joined these together, but there are gaps between the sides. There is also some noise and a few choppy spots near the beginning, and some speed variation....

Part 19 of 'Complete Broadcast Day' has a skipped groove at 6:04 - during a clarinet solo in the Louis Prima rendition of "I'll Remember". In this version the missing time is restored with a seamless patch from elsewhere in the passage. The performance is wonderful. Please enjoy.

WJSV COMPLETE DAY Thursday, September 21st, 1939, radio station WJSV in Washington, D.C., recorded their entire broadcast day -- from sign on, to sign off. This was before the advent of magnetic recording tape, so transcription disks were used. The overall quality of these disk recordings is good to excellent, except for a few spots of noticeable distortion. These transcriptions were transferred to tape in their entirety, except for the ommission of the evening re-broadcast of FDR's address to...

WORLD ADVENTURER'S CLUB The year is 1932, and the nation is still suffering from the effects of the Great Depression, recovery is in sight, fueled by industry success as much as government programs. The listeners of The World Adventerer’s Club and other travelogue series in this early part of radio’s Golden Age were offered glimpses of exotic places and extraordinary events without leaving their own front room. The renewed interest in far off lands and cultures was, at least in part, also...

Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life - Unedited These episodes are unedited. They run for around 60 minutes each. More was recorded than was needed and then the recordings were edited down to the half hour episodes that were broadcast a few weeks later. These were copied from reel to 90 or 60 min cassettes with auto-reverse which missed approx 0.4 of a sec as it turned the cassette. Where it was available, the missing piece from the broadcast version of the episode has been patched in. Sometimes it...
